GE dryer drum not spinning in Toronto — what we check
- Broken, stretched, or slipped drive belt is the number-one GE not-spinning call: the motor hums or runs normally but the drum sits dead, or it free-wheels with a thump. The part is the GE WE12M29 belt (89.5 in, 4-rib/3-groove, shared with Hotpoint and many Kenmore-by-GE units). Diagnostic is to spin the drum by hand with the top off — if it turns free and easy, the belt has snapped or jumped the idler. We thread the new belt grooved-side-in over the drum and back onto the idler and motor pulley.
- Idler pulley failure (GE WE12X83) is the second classic: the spring-loaded idler keeps tension on the WE12M29 belt, and when its wheel bearing goes gritty or seizes, the belt slips off the motor pulley and the drum stops — usually after a squeal or chirp that tracked drum speed. We spin the idler by hand on the call; a noisy or stiff wheel gets swapped rather than just re-tensioned, and because a tired idler is what lets a belt ride wrong and snap, we replace the WE12X83 idler and WE12M29 belt together so the machine doesn't come back.
- Drive motor failure — GE WE17X10010 (supersedes WE17M22/WE17M0022 and the older 'T' and 'V' style motors). Signature is a motor that hums or buzzes on start but won't turn the drum, or one that runs a few minutes then trips its internal thermal overload and only resets after it cools. Before condemning the motor we always rule out a bound roller, a seized idler, or a jammed blower wheel first, because a dragging drive train fakes a dead motor on this platform far more often than the motor itself fails. A hum with the belt off and the drum turning free by hand is what actually points at the motor windings.
- Seized rear drum bearing (GE WE25M40 kit) on the older rear-shaft DBXR/DWSR-era machines: the rear bearing/sleeve grinds and rumbles for weeks — louder under load — then binds hard enough that the drum won't turn at all, or the motor overloads trying to spin it. The genuine kit ships the shaft, bearing, ground strap and seven screws. This is the 'it got loud, then it just stopped turning' GE call — confirmed by pulling the belt and finding the drum squeals or won't rotate by hand, which means the bearing, not the belt.
- Worn drum support rollers and axles (GE WE03X10008 roller-with-axle): the drum rides on support rollers, and when the axles dry out and bind, the rollers stop spinning freely, the drum drags, and the motor overloads and stops — presenting as 'ran a minute, then quit turning.' GE practice (and ours) is to replace rollers as a set, not one, because a flat-spotted roller usually means its mate is worn too, and a worn roller chews the belt prematurely. The hand-spin test with the belt off separates this from a control or motor fault: stiff or noisy rotation means rollers.
- No-spin that is really a no-start in the motor circuit: the GE WE4M519 rotary start switch (replaces WE4M315/WE4M326/WE4M402) or the WE4M415 door switch. The door switch is the last switch to neutral — if it doesn't close, the motor never energizes — and the rotary start switch must make and hold its contact. Either failing leaves the drum dead with the console still lit. We listen for the start click and meter both switches (and the blower-housing thermal fuse, which on the GTD platform is wired so an open fuse also kills the motor circuit and the dryer won't start) for continuity before pulling panels, so we aren't chasing a 20-to-40-dollar switch the long way.
- Worn front drum bearing and glides letting the drum drop and bind — on the top-control GTD42/GTD45 platform the drum front rides on the WE3M26 top bearing and the WE1M504/WE1M1067 slides; when the felt and slides wear through, the drum tips, scrapes, and can stall the motor. When a GTD machine needs the whole front renewed in one visit we use the genuine GE WE49X20697 bearing service kit (WE3M26 bearing, WE9M30 felt, WE12M29 belt, and the WE1M504/WE1M1067 slides together), so every front-end wear part is fresh and the not-spinning complaint doesn't return as a scrape. Note GE is effectively code-less on the spin path: a not-spinning GE has no dedicated fault code — there is no 'belt' or 'motor' code to read — so it is diagnosed by measurement and the hand-spin test, not by a display code. The numeric E-codes the GTD/GFD platform does throw are temperature/thermistor-side faults on the heat circuit (inlet/outlet thermistor, control board), which is a different complaint than a dead drum.
