Why is my dryer loud or squealing?
Most common cause on a GE dryer in Toronto: worn drum rollers or idler pulley. A typical repair runs $260–$380 all-in, including the $149.95 diagnostic, credited 100% toward your repair. Not urgent, but worsening noise means accelerating wear. Book at convenience

Most GE dryer faults in Toronto come down to a handful of parts — and the majority are worth repairing rather than replacing a 10–13 years appliance. Anthony is a Red Seal certified technician who carries the common dryer parts on the van, so most Toronto jobs are diagnosed and fixed in a single visit.

GE dryer making noise (squeaking, grinding, thumping) in Toronto — what we check
- Squeal that worsens as the load gets heavier on older rear-shaft GE dryers (DBXR/DWSR-era) is the classic rear drum bearing wearing through its sleeve. We fix it with the GE WE25M40 rear drum bearing kit (includes the shaft, bearing, ground strap and screws). Caught early it is a cheap fix; run too long and the worn shaft scores the drum.
- On the newer top-control GTD42/GTD45 models the squeal/scrape at start-up is the front of the drum riding on worn plastic glides and a worn front support bearing — GE WE3M26 front drum support bearing plus the WE1M504 and WE1M1067 drum slides (replaced as a set, two of each). These wear silently until the felt seal is gone, then it scrapes metal-on-metal.
- A steady screech or chirp that tracks drum speed is almost always the idler pulley bearing, not the drum — GE WE12X83 idler pulley. We spin it by hand on the call; a gritty or noisy pulley wheel gets swapped rather than just re-tensioning the belt.
- A rhythmic thump/slap (or a motor that hums while the drum sits still) points at the drive belt — GE WE12M29 (89.5 in, GE/Hotpoint). A frayed or stretched belt thumps where the splice passes the rollers; a snapped one lets the drum free-wheel. We always inspect the idler and glides while the belt is off so the dryer does not come back noisy from a second worn part.
- A rattle or intermittent scrape that changes with airflow is the blower wheel — either a foreign object (coin, bra wire, sock) lodged against the housing, or a worn hub sleeve letting the wheel wobble on the motor shaft. Confirmed GE blower wheels here are WE16M15 on older platforms and WE16X23857 on newer ones; we clear the obstruction first and only replace the wheel if the sleeve is worn.
- When a GE/Hotpoint dryer is noisy from the front AND the customer wants it done in one visit, the economical route is the GE WE49X20697 bearing service kit — the genuine GE kit renews the WE3M26 front bearing, WE12M29 belt, the WE1M504/WE1M1067 drum slides (two of each) and the WE9M30 felt seal together, so every front-end wear part except the idler is renewed in one go. We carry a WE12X83 idler pulley alongside it and swap that too if it spins gritty. This is our default for high-mileage GTD machines.
- GE dryers are largely code-less for noise — dial and HM electronic models diagnose by measurement, not a fault code. The real test is pulling the belt and turning the drum by hand: free and quiet means belt/idler; squeal or grind by hand means the drum bearing (rear WE25M40 or front WE3M26 + slides). A moisture-sensor 'reads dry early' complaint is unrelated to noise and we do not chase it on a noisy call.
GE making noise (squeaking, grinding, thumping) in Toronto — the local specifics
- The recurring GE-noise pattern we see across Toronto is the long-lived top-control GTD42/GTD45 and older DBXR machine that has been squealing for months before the call — by then the front glides or rear bearing have worn through and started scoring, so the smart fix is renewing the whole front-end wear set in one visit rather than chasing one squeak at a time.
- We come to a noisy GE/Hotpoint call carrying the WE12M29 belt, WE12X83 idler, WE3M26 front bearing and WE1M504/WE1M1067 slides, with the WE49X20697 service kit and a WE25M40 rear bearing kit staged for same-day pickup once the model and noise source are confirmed on site.
