Most dryer faults in the GTA come down to a handful of parts — and the majority are worth repairing rather than replacing a 10–13 years appliance. Anthony is a Red Seal certified technician who carries the common dryer parts on the van, so most the GTA jobs are diagnosed and fixed in a single visit.

Making noise (squeaking, grinding, thumping)$260–$380
Making noise (squeaking, grinding, thumping): A squeal, grind, or rhythmic thump that builds as the drum turns.
Also described as: squeaking, grinding, thumping, rumbling
Likely causes
- Worn drum rollers or idler pulley (Most common)
- Worn drum glide / slide bearings (Common)
- Failed blower wheel or a foreign object in the blower (Occasional)
How we diagnose it — in order
- Unplug the dryer, then check the drum and lint trap area for the cheap stuff first: coins, buttons, underwire, or a pen caught between the drum and the front bulkhead, plus lint packed around the blower. A loose item is the most common cause and costs nothing to clear. Also confirm the dryer is level and the feet are tight, since a rock can read as a thump.
- Pin down where the noise lives: run a brief empty cycle and listen, then reproduce by hand. A rhythmic thump that matches drum rotation points to the rear of the cabinet (drum support rollers); a steady squeal or scrape that rises with the drum points to the front (glides or idler). This tells you which end to open before pulling anything apart.
- Open the cabinet, release idler tension and slip the drive belt off, then turn the drum slowly by hand. With the belt removed the motor and idler are out of the loop, so any grinding, catching, or bumping you now feel is the drum support system itself: a flat-spotted or seized rear roller, or worn-through front glides showing metal-to-metal contact.
- With the belt still off, spin the idler pulley and the belt-side of the motor by hand and inspect the belt. A squealing idler pulley wheel that wobbles or won't spin freely, or a frayed/cracked belt, is a classic squeal that builds with the drum. Replace the idler pulley and belt together since they wear as a set and the belt is already off.
- If the drum, rollers, glides, idler and belt all check out, run the motor as the definitive last step: power the dryer (technician-only with cabinet open) and listen at the drive motor. A grinding or growling that's present whenever the motor turns, independent of the drum load, condemns the motor bearings. The motor is the most expensive part, so confirm everything upstream is good before replacing it.
✔ Safe to check yourself
- Check pockets for coins/objects that may be in the drum or blower.
- Confirm the dryer is level.
✖ Leave to a technician
- Roller, pulley and bearing replacement is a technician job.

Brand-specific patterns we see
- GE: GE's dryer signature in the trade is the rear drum bearing: a worn bearing/sleeve makes the classic squeal-then-grind that gets louder with load, and the modern fix is a one-piece bearing service kit. Heat faults follow the usual element/fuse path with WE-prefix parts.

Repair or replace your dryer?
A simple rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new unit and the appliance is near the end of its life, replacement may make more sense.
A dryer typically lasts – and costs $800–$1,500 to replace — so most faults under about $450 are worth fixing. We'll always tell you honestly when a repair isn't worth your money.
Keep your dryer running
Simple habits that prevent the most common the GTA repairs.
- Clean the lint filter before every load.
- Have the full vent run (wall to outside) cleared once a year — the top fire-prevention step.
- Don't overload the drum; it accelerates roller and belt wear.
- Check the exterior vent flap opens freely and isn't blocked by lint or snow.
