Most dryer faults in the GTA come down to a handful of parts — and the majority are worth repairing rather than replacing an appliance that typically lasts 10–13 years. Anthony is a Red Seal certified technician who carries the common dryer parts on the van, so most jobs in the GTA are diagnosed and fixed in a single visit.

Drum not spinning$260–$400
Drum not spinning: The dryer powers on and may hum, but the drum doesn't rotate.
Also described as: drum won't turn, hums but no spin
Likely causes
- Broken drive belt (Most common)
- Failed drum roller, idler pulley, or worn bearing (Common)
- Failed drive motor (Occasional)
- Broken door switch (won't start at all) (Occasional)
How we diagnose it — in order
- Unplug the dryer, open the door, and spin the drum by hand. This one move splits the diagnosis: spins freely with almost no resistance = broken or off-track drive belt (the most common cause); spins with heavy drag, grinding, or won't budge = a seized idler pulley or worn drum roller; turns with normal resistance = the fault is electrical (motor or switch).
- Pull the top/front panel and inspect the drive belt. Look for a snapped belt lying in the cabinet or a belt that has rolled off the motor pulley or idler. The belt is cheap and the #1 cause, so confirm it visually before chasing anything else, do not order one on the hum sound alone.
- Spin the idler pulley and both rear drum support rollers by hand. Each should turn smoothly and quietly. A pulley or roller that squeals, grinds, drags, or has bearing play creates enough friction to stall the motor even with a good belt, and a frozen idler is the #1 reason a freshly replaced belt fails again. Replace rollers as a pair.
- With the belt removed, try to turn the motor pulley by hand and confirm it rotates freely. If it's locked or grinds, the motor or its bearings have seized. If it turns free, the mechanical drive path is clear and the fault is in the motor's electrical start.
- Technician step: with power restored and the door-switch/start circuit confirmed good, test the drive motor. A motor that hums for 2-3 seconds then clicks off is tripping its internal thermal overload; a constant hum with no rotation and the pulley free points to a failed start winding or start switch. Confirm a bad winding with a continuity/resistance test before condemning the motor, it is the definitive and most expensive part.
✔ Safe to check yourself
- Confirm the door closes fully and the start button is held briefly.
- Listen: a hum with no spin usually points to the belt or motor.
✖ Leave to a technician
- Belt, roller and motor replacement require opening the cabinet — technician job.

Repair or replace your dryer?
A simple rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new unit and the appliance is near the end of its life, replacement may make more sense.
A dryer typically lasts – and costs $800–$1,500 to replace — so most faults under about $450 are worth fixing. We'll always tell you honestly when a repair isn't worth your money.
Keep your dryer running
Simple habits that prevent the most common the GTA repairs.
- Clean the lint filter before every load.
- Have the full vent run (wall to outside) cleared once a year — the top fire-prevention step.
- Don't overload the drum; it accelerates roller and belt wear.
- Check the exterior vent flap opens freely and isn't blocked by lint or snow.
