Why won't my dryer start or turn on?
Most common cause on a dryer in the GTA: open thermal fuse cutting all power to the controls (usually a clogged vent overheated it). A typical repair runs $250–$390 all-in, including the $149.95 diagnostic, credited 100% toward your repair. No drum motion means no fire risk while it sits, but a blown thermal fuse usually points to a clogged vent, and a burnt cord or outlet is a hazard — book promptly.

Most dryer faults in the GTA come down to a handful of parts — and the majority are worth repairing rather than replacing a 10–13 years appliance. Anthony is a Red Seal certified technician who carries the common dryer parts on the van, so most the GTA jobs are diagnosed and fixed in a single visit.

Won't start / no power$250–$390
Won't start / no power: You press start and nothing happens — no lights, a hum with no drum motion, or the dryer is completely dead.
Also described as: dead, won't turn on, no power, no lights, hums but won't start, nothing happens when I press start
Likely causes
- Open thermal fuse cutting all power to the controls (usually a clogged vent overheated it) (Most common)
- Failed door switch — the dryer can't tell the door is shut (Common)
- Faulty start switch or push-to-start button (Common)
- No power to the unit — a tripped or half-failed double-pole breaker, a lost control-side 240V leg, or a burnt line cord / outlet (when the control-side leg is gone the dryer goes fully dark) (Occasional)
- Failed main control board (Rare)
How we diagnose it — in order
- Confirm the power supply at the wall: make sure the cord is fully seated, then fully cycle the dryer's double-pole breaker OFF then ON (both tied handles). A 'half-tripped' breaker is the classic dead/hum cause -- it can look ON while one of the two hot legs is open, which leaves an electric dryer with lights but a hum and no drum motion. If it trips again on reset, stop and call an electrician.
- Verify voltage at the outlet (technician step): with a meter on the 240V receptacle, confirm both hot legs are live -- roughly 120V each leg to neutral/ground and about 240V across the two hot terminals. Missing one leg is a house-wiring/outlet fault, not the dryer; inspect the plug, cord, and outlet for burn marks while you're there.
- Check the door switch: shut the door firmly (many won't start if not fully latched), then with the door open press the switch lever -- if the drum light doesn't go out, the door switch is failing. Confirm by testing it for continuity, actuated vs not, and replace if it doesn't switch.
- Test the thermal fuse for continuity (most common failed PART on a no-start): unplug the dryer, find the fuse on the blower housing or heat duct, and meter it -- no continuity means it's blown and needs replacing. A blown thermal fuse is almost always caused by a clogged vent, so clear the exhaust vent/lint duct or it will blow again.
- Test the push-to-start switch for continuity while pressed: a dryer that's getting power and has good door/fuse circuits but stays silent (no hum) when you press start often has a dead start switch. Replace it if it shows no continuity when actuated.
- Last, condemn the timer or main control board: only after power, door switch, thermal fuse, and start switch all test good, suspect the control. Confirm the board is getting its input voltage but not sending the motor run signal before replacing this expensive part -- it's the least common cause.
✔ Safe to check yourself
- Confirm the door clicks fully shut and hold the start button a moment — most dryers won't start on a door that isn't latched.
- Check for a Child Lock / Control Lock (e.g. 'CL' on the display) and that the cycle isn't on a delay-start.
- Reset the breaker: flip the dryer's double-pole breaker fully off, then back on — a half-tripped double-pole breaker can leave the dryer dead.
✖ Leave to a technician
- The thermal fuse, door switch, start switch, line cord and control board sit inside the cabinet or on the heat/power circuit — testing the 240V feed and these parts is a technician job (electrical / fire safety).
- Gas-model start faults and any wiring at the outlet, cord or terminal block are technician-only — burnt cords and a lost leg are fire and shock hazards.

Repair or replace your dryer?
A simple rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new unit and the appliance is near the end of its life, replacement may make more sense.
A dryer typically lasts – and costs $800–$1,500 to replace — so most faults under about $450 are worth fixing. We'll always tell you honestly when a repair isn't worth your money.
Keep your dryer running
Simple habits that prevent the most common the GTA repairs.
- Clean the lint filter before every load.
- Have the full vent run (wall to outside) cleared once a year — the top fire-prevention step.
- Don't overload the drum; it accelerates roller and belt wear.
- Check the exterior vent flap opens freely and isn't blocked by lint or snow.
