Why does my dryer smell like it's burning?
Most common cause on a dryer in the GTA: lint built up on or near the heating element / inside the cabinet, scorching as it heats — the most serious because it can ignite. A typical repair runs $260–$420 all-in, including the $149.95 diagnostic, credited 100% toward your repair. A burning smell is a fire-risk symptom — stop using the dryer and book a same-day inspection rather than running it again. Same-day

Most dryer faults in the GTA come down to a handful of parts — and the majority are worth repairing rather than replacing a 10–13 years appliance. Anthony is a Red Seal certified technician who carries the common dryer parts on the van, so most the GTA jobs are diagnosed and fixed in a single visit.

Burning smell Same-day$260–$420
Burning smell: A hot, burning, rubbery, or sharp electrical odour while the dryer runs — sometimes with a faint haze of smoke.
Also described as: smells like burning, burning rubber smell, hot electrical smell, dryer smells hot, melting smell
Likely causes
- Lint built up on or near the heating element / inside the cabinet, scorching as it heats — the most serious because it can ignite (Most common)
- A slipping or worn drive belt creating friction heat (the classic burning-rubber smell) (Common)
- A seized drum roller, glide bearing, or idler pulley generating friction heat (Common)
- Overheating drive motor (worn bearings or a stuck/failed start switch overheating the windings) (Occasional)
- Melting wiring or a scorched terminal block / power cord — a loose connection arcing (sharp, acrid electrical smell) (Occasional (electric))
How we diagnose it — in order
- Stop the dryer and unplug it (or shut the gas/breaker). Pull and clear the lint screen, then check airflow: a clogged screen or restricted vent makes lint and the cabinet run hot enough to smoulder, and it is the most common and most dangerous cause. Confirm strong, warm airflow at the exterior vent hood with the dryer running, and feel for a hot cabinet, long dry times, or a smoky/hot-lint odour.
- Clear and inspect the full vent run and the dryer's internal lint chute/blower housing. Disconnect the transition duct and look for packed lint, crushed flex, a flapping or blocked exterior damper, and lint scorched against the heat source. Run briefly with the duct off the back: if airflow is strong and the smell eases, the restriction was the cause; if the smell persists, move inside the machine.
- With power off and the cabinet open, check the friction/drive parts for a rubbery or hot-belt odour. Inspect the drive belt for glazing, fraying, or a slipping/burnt-rubber smell; spin the idler pulley and drum rollers/glide bearings by hand for stiffness, wobble, flat spots, or scorch marks where the drum scrapes the bulkhead. Rotate the drum by hand to feel for binding that overheats the belt.
- Technician check: inspect the drive motor and its bearings. With power off, spin the motor pulley by hand for roughness, drag, or a seized bearing, and inspect the windings and start switch for darkened insulation, melted varnish, or a hot-electrical smell. A motor labouring against a failed bearing overheats the windings and is a common electrical-burn source once airflow and belt are ruled out.
- Technician check (electric models): inspect the power cord terminal block and heating element for arcing/overheating. With power off, look for discoloured, loose, or pitted terminal-block connections, melted insulation, or burnt push-on connectors at the element and wiring harness; then check the element for a short to ground or visible arcing. Loose high-current connections and a grounded element produce a sharp electrical odour and are the definitive last items to confirm before condemning the part.
✔ Safe to check yourself
- Stop the dryer and unplug it (or switch off the breaker) the moment you smell burning — then leave the door open to cool.
- Pull the lint screen and check it isn't packed; clear visible lint from the trap housing and around the door seal.
- Check the exterior vent flap opens and the duct behind the dryer isn't crushed or choked — restricted airflow is the root of most overheating burns.
✖ Leave to a technician
- Do not keep running a dryer that smells like burning — lint ignition and electrical arcing are fire hazards; have it inspected before further use.
- Anything inside the cabinet — heating element, belt, rollers, motor, wiring, terminal block — and all gas components are technician-only (fire, electrical, and gas safety).

Repair or replace your dryer?
A simple rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new unit and the appliance is near the end of its life, replacement may make more sense.
A dryer typically lasts – and costs $800–$1,500 to replace — so most faults under about $450 are worth fixing. We'll always tell you honestly when a repair isn't worth your money.
Keep your dryer running
Simple habits that prevent the most common the GTA repairs.
- Clean the lint filter before every load.
- Have the full vent run (wall to outside) cleared once a year — the top fire-prevention step.
- Don't overload the drum; it accelerates roller and belt wear.
- Check the exterior vent flap opens freely and isn't blocked by lint or snow.
