Likely causes

How we diagnose it — in order
- Kill power first: turn the burner knob off and watch the element. If it stays glowing on high after the knob is off, treat the appliance as live and unsafe -- shut off the breaker (or unplug the range) before touching anything. A burner that won't shut off at the knob has welded contacts feeding it constant power.
- Pull the knob and inspect the infinite switch (simmerstat) behind it -- this is the failed part in the large majority of these calls. Look for a melted/discoloured knob shaft, charring, or a burnt-plastic smell at that one position; the cycling contacts inside fuse closed and send full voltage to the element regardless of dial setting.
- Run the swap test before condemning any part: move the suspect element and its infinite switch to a known-good burner location (or move a good element into the suspect socket). If the fault follows the switch, the simmerstat is bad; if full-high heat stays with the socket/element, the problem is downstream -- this isolates switch vs element in a couple minutes with no parts cost.
- With power confirmed OFF and wires lifted off the terminals, ohm out the infinite switch. On HIGH there should be continuity across the line/heater pairs (commonly L1-H1 and L2-H2); a switch that reads closed in EVERY knob position -- including OFF -- has welded contacts and is the cause. Replace the matching infinite switch (correct amp rating / OEM part).
- If the switch tests good, check the surface element for a short to ground: with the element disconnected, ohm each element terminal to the element sheath/chassis. Any continuity to ground means the coil has shorted internally and is back-feeding the element on full -- replace the element. (On glass/radiant tops also confirm the element isn't pinched or arcing to the receptacle.)
- Only after switch and element clear: trace the wiring harness and terminal block for a melted/shorted connection or a stuck relay on electronic-control models, and confirm correct supply voltage at the block. A direct wiring short or a failed control relay is the rare, last cause of constant full-power heat.

- Turn the burner off; if it stays hot, switch off the breaker to the range and leave it off until repaired.
- Confirm the knob is fully seated on its shaft and the markings line up — a slipped knob can mimic this.
