How we diagnose it — in order
- Power the cooktop down and let it fully cool, then check for moisture: if the clicking started right after cooking, a boil-over, or cleaning, water on the burner head or electrode is the cause. Dry every burner base and ignition port with a dry cloth, then warm-air dry the electrode area (low hair-dryer) and confirm the clicking stops as it dries.
- Lift the grate and inspect the burner cap: a cap sitting crooked or shifted off its seat leaves the spark gap exposed and keeps the igniter firing even after the flame catches. Re-seat the cap squarely on its base and verify it sits flat and centered, then relight and confirm the click stops once the burner lights.
- Clean and inspect the spark electrode and its ceramic: scrape off food, grease, and carbon bridging the gap, and look for cracked ceramic or a corroded/loose electrode tip. Debris or a cracked insulator gives the spark a path to ground and keeps the module clicking. Clean the gap and reseat any loose wire on the electrode.
- Test the spark ignition switches behind the control knobs (technician, power isolated): a wet or shorted switch sticks closed and feeds continuous voltage to the module, which is why one stuck switch can make every electrode click with all knobs off. Check each switch for continuity in the OFF position and inspect the harness for moisture; replace any switch that reads closed/shorted with the knob off.
- Only after the switches test good, condemn the spark/ignition module as the definitive part: with switches and electrodes ruled out, a faulty module drives the electrodes to spark on its own or non-stop. Confirm by substituting a known-good module (or verifying the module outputs spark with all switch inputs open) before replacing it.

- Turn every burner fully off, then dry under the caps — let the cooktop air-dry an hour after spills or cleaning.
- Lift each cap and head and reseat it squarely; a crooked cap is the usual constant-click cause.
- Clean food crust off the electrodes with a dry toothbrush.
