How we diagnose it — in order
- Verify and quantify the fault first: place a calibrated oven thermometer (or thermocouple meter) on the center rack, set 350F, and read it ~15-20 min after the preheat beep. Confirm how far off it runs and whether it's consistently high or low (not just slow/uneven) before touching anything.
- Check and use the built-in calibration offset: enter the oven's calibration mode (typically hold BAKE, or BAKE+BROIL, until '0F'/'CAL'/offset shows) and adjust toward the measured error. If the drift is small and stays corrected, you're done. If it needs more than ~35F of correction or the offset keeps drifting back, stop calibrating -- that's a component fault, not a calibration issue.
- Test the oven temperature sensor (RTD) at room temp: unplug the range, disconnect the sensor, and measure resistance with a multimeter. A typical RTD reads ~1080 ohms near 70F (about +2 ohms per F). Open/infinite or off by more than ~100 ohms condemns the sensor. If it passes cold but the oven only drifts at high temp, suspect the sensor degrading hot -- compare against the model's resistance chart.
- Inspect and test the bake element (and broil/convection element): with power on, confirm it glows fully and evenly red -- a hidden or partially failed element bakes unevenly and reads low. With power off, check continuity and look for blistering, breaks, or burnt terminals; a damaged or unevenly-heating element gets replaced.
- If the sensor and elements test good but temperature is still off or erratic, condemn the electronic oven control board (ERC/clock) last: inspect for surge damage, burnt relays, or scorched traces. The board reads the sensor and cycles the element, so a faulty relay or processor produces inaccurate temps -- replace it only after the cheaper sensor and element have been cleared.

- Confirm the problem with a standalone oven thermometer at centre rack across a couple of bakes — note how many degrees and which direction it's off.
- Many ovens let you enter a calibration offset (commonly up to ±35°F / ~±20°C) from the control panel — check your manual; this is owner-doable for small drifts.
- Make sure the sensor probe at the rear of the cavity isn't bent against the wall or a rack.
