Likely causes
- Electric: failed (open/burned-out) broil element — the top element (Most common (electric))
- Gas: weak or failed broil igniter, or the broil section of the safety gas valve not opening (Most common (gas))
- Control/relay board not switching power to the broil circuit (Common)
- Wiring or terminal fault at the broil element/igniter (heat-stressed connectors) (Occasional)
How we diagnose it — in order
- Confirm the fault and rule out user/mode error first: select Broil, give it 60-90 seconds, and watch the top element (electric) or broil burner (gas) directly. Verify nothing simple is in play -- a tripped one leg of the 240V supply, a Sabbath/demo/lockout mode, a stuck door latch interrupting the cook circuit, or a Hi/Lo broil setting feeding the wrong element. Note whether bake truly works, since shared parts narrow the diagnosis.
- On an electric oven, pull power and ohm the broil element across its terminals: a healthy element typically reads in the low tens of ohms (roughly 15-30 on most units); an open/infinite reading or visible breaks, blisters, or burn-through condemns the element -- the single most common cause. Also inspect the element terminals and receptacle for arcing/burn damage.
- If the electric element reads good, restore power and check for 120V at the broil element terminals during a broil call. No voltage points upstream to the control, not the element. (On a gas oven, the parallel check is to watch the broil igniter: if it never glows, suspect the igniter circuit or control; if it glows orange but the burner never lights, the igniter is weak.)
- On a gas oven with a glowing-but-no-flame broil igniter, clamp-meter the igniter current draw during a broil call. A weak broil igniter that no longer pulls enough amps to open the safety valve is the most common gas-broil failure -- it glows but cannot trip the valve, so no gas flows. Confirm gas is actually reaching the oven and the broil igniter, not just the bake side.
- If gas, voltage, and the heating part all test good, suspect the control that switches the broil leg: bench-test the oven safety valve resistance on a gas unit (a failed valve won't pass gas even with a strong igniter), or test the broil relay on the relay/control board on an electric unit. Inspect the board for a burnt or welded relay; condemn the safety valve or relay board last, only after the cheaper element/igniter and supply checks pass.
