How we diagnose it — in order
- Run a wash cycle and watch/listen: confirm the lid switch clicks when the lid is closed and that the motor actually runs (hum or rotation) during the agitate portion. No motor sound usually points upstream to the lid switch or control; a running motor with a still agitator points downstream to the drive.
- Grip the agitator by hand with the machine off and try to turn it: if only the top cap spins freely while the base stays put, the agitator dogs (cam-and-ratchet inside the agitator cap) are worn. Pop the cap, pull the agitator, and inspect/replace the dogs and drive cogs first since this is the cheapest, most common fix.
- Test the lid switch for continuity with a multimeter (lid closed = closed circuit). On most top-loaders agitation is disabled until the lid switch confirms closed, so a failed switch or broken actuator stops agitation even with a good drive.
- Determine whether spin still works. Spin works but no agitate isolates the fault to the agitator/transmission shifter; neither agitate nor spin points to the motor coupler (direct-drive) or drive belt (belt-drive) -- inspect the coupler for cracked/worn plastic-rubber halves or the belt for glazing/breakage.
- With the cabinet open, inspect the drive coupling/belt and the transmission drive block (splined coupler on the transmission output shaft): a stripped drive block lets the shaft turn without driving the agitator. Replace the coupler/belt/drive block as found.
- If the lid switch, agitator dogs, coupler/belt and drive block all test good and the motor drives correctly, condemn the transmission (gearcase) -- the definitive, most expensive part, replaced only after the cheaper drivetrain parts are ruled out.

- Confirm the lid is closing and the lid-lock engages — many top-loaders won't agitate with the lid up.
- Listen: a motor that hums or runs but no agitation usually points to the coupler or stripped dogs.
- Don't overload — a packed drum can stall agitation and stress the coupler.
