Likely causes

How we diagnose it — in order

1. Rule out the free fixes first: redistribute the load and run a spin with a balanced load, since a single heavy item (a duvet, bath mat, or wad of towels on one side) is the most common cause of banging and 'walking.' If the noise vanishes with an even load, it was an imbalance, not a fault.
2. Check that the machine is level and solid: put a level on top, set all four feet firmly on the floor and lock the jam nuts so it can't rock, and confirm the cabinet doesn't shift on tile/uneven sub-floor. On a recently installed or relocated unit, verify the rear shipping bolts were removed -- bolts left in make the tub fight violently and bang on every spin.
3. With the washer OFF, open it and spin the drum by hand while listening, then grab the basket and rock it up/down and front/back. Smooth and quiet with no vertical play points away from the bearing; a grinding/rumbling rotation or any wobble/play confirms a worn tub bearing -- and a rust streak or grit under the door boot/seal is the giveaway that the tub seal failed and let water into the bearing.
4. Inspect the suspension that controls tub swing: on front-loaders check the shock absorbers/damper rods for a detached, leaking, or worn unit, and on top-loaders check the suspension rods, springs, and snubber pad/ring. A blown shock or a dry/worn snubber lets the tub slam the cabinet and bang loudly as speed builds, while the bearing itself may be fine.
5. Confirm the rotating assembly and counterweight: check that the concrete/cast counterweight and its bolts are tight (a loose weight thumps hard), and inspect the spider/support arm behind the basket for corrosion or cracking, which throws the basket off-balance at high RPM. A cracked spider mimics a bad bearing and means the inner basket assembly is failing.
6. Condemn the tub bearing only after the above: with imbalance, level, suspension, and counterweight ruled out, a deep rumble that worsens during high-speed spin is the bearing. Quote it as a major job (bearing + tub seal, and often the spider/outer tub) and advise the customer to stop running it, since grinding it further damages the seal, shaft, and basket.
