How we diagnose it — in order
- Locate the source first: open the freezer and listen at the back wall, then listen at the rear-bottom of the cabinet. A buzz/rattle that gets louder inside the freezer points to the evaporator fan; a buzz from the rear points to the condenser fan or compressor; a buzz only during ice-maker water fill points to the inlet valve. This split decides everything that follows.
- Pull the fridge out, unplug it, and clean the condenser coils and condenser-fan area at the rear/bottom. Caked dust, pet hair, or debris forces harder running and is the most common, cheapest source of a back-of-fridge buzz; clear any cardboard or packaging touching the fan blade while you are in there.
- For a freezer 'fan hitting ice' sound: remove the rear freezer panel and inspect the evaporator coil and fan for frost/ice buildup. Heavy frost means a failed defrost system, not just the fan -- test the defrost heater and defrost thermostat for continuity and confirm the control/timer advances into defrost before blaming the fan.
- If the buzz is at the rear and coils are clean, unplug and spin the condenser fan motor by hand: roughness, drag, or wobble means worn bearings. Confirm by checking the evaporator fan the same way (spin freely, inspect blade, grommets, wiring) -- a dragging or scraping motor is replaced.
- If the buzz tracks the ice-maker/water-dispenser fill cycle, test the water inlet valve: confirm adequate household water pressure to the line, then check the solenoid coil -- a valve struggling to open or clogged with mineral sediment makes a loud 60Hz buzz and is replaced.
- Only after fans, defrost, and inlet valve are ruled out, assess the compressor (technician-only, sealed system): a loud, persistent, straining hum at the rear-bottom -- versus the normal low hum -- with start-relay clicking or failure-to-start indicates a failing start relay/overload or compressor. Test the relay/overload first; condemn the compressor last.
