Likely causes
- Failed or scaled water-inlet valve (the solenoid valve that lets water in) (Most common)
- Closed or partly closed supply shut-off valve under the sink, or a kinked/clogged fill hose (Common)
- Stuck float / float switch telling the control the tub is already full (Common)
- Clogged inlet-valve screen from hard-water sediment, or a control not energizing the valve (Occasional)
How we diagnose it — in order
- Confirm the water is actually getting to the machine first -- it's the most common and cheapest cause. Open the hot-water shutoff valve under the sink fully, check the fill hose isn't kinked behind the unit, then disconnect the supply line and confirm strong flow into a bucket. No flow or a trickle means the problem is upstream of the dishwasher (closed/partial valve, kinked line, or a clogged inlet-valve screen) -- not the appliance.
- Verify the door is latching and the door switch is making. The control won't send power to the fill valve unless the door switch closes, so push the latch firmly until it clicks, then run a cycle and listen for the detergent/cycle relay. With power off, an experienced tech checks the door switch for continuity when latched -- a switch that never closes mimics a 'won't fill' fault for the price of a part.
- Inspect the overfill float and float switch in the front corner of the tub. Lift the float cap, clear any food debris, broken glass, or mineral scale, and confirm it drops and rises freely -- a float stuck in the 'up' position tells the control the tub is already full and blocks the fill. With power off, test the float switch for continuity (closed when float is down); no continuity means a stuck or failed switch starving the valve of power.
- Before condemning the inlet valve, confirm the control is actually commanding it. With the unit safely powered and in the fill portion of the cycle, measure AC voltage at the valve's two terminals -- you should see roughly 110-120V AC during fill. Getting full voltage but no water points to the valve (or its screen/supply); getting no voltage points upstream to the float circuit, door switch, wiring, or control board -- this step decides which way to go.
- Condemn and replace the water inlet valve only after the above clears -- it's the definitive, paid part. With power off and the valve unplugged, set the meter to ohms and test the solenoid coil across its terminals: a healthy coil reads roughly 500-1,500 ohms, while OL/infinity means the coil is burned out and the valve must be replaced. If the coil reads in-range AND it gets ~120V during fill but still won't pass water, the valve diaphragm or inlet screen is mechanically blocked -- replace the valve.
