How we diagnose it — in order
- Rule out a false alarm first: run a short cycle and confirm it's clean water leaking, not suds. Check what detergent the owner uses (hand/dish soap or overfilled pods cause sudsing that pushes water out the door) and inspect the rinse-aid dispenser cap for an overfill or weeping seal. Wipe up, switch to proper dishwasher detergent, and re-test before condemning any part.
- Check that the dishwasher sits level and the drain hose is run with a high loop and is kink-free, then trace the easy external water paths: tighten the fill (inlet) and drain hose clamps, and check the under-sink supply connection. Wipe everything dry, run a cycle, and watch where the first bead of water reappears.
- Open the door and inspect the door gasket corner-to-corner (corners dry out and crack first) and feel for a flattened or brittle seal; pull the lower rack and inspect the spray arms for cracks that redirect water against the door. Reseat or replace a failed gasket and re-run to confirm the front-of-floor leak stops.
- Lift out the filter and clear any food debris fouling the sump, then check the overfill float in the tub floor: confirm it moves freely up and down and isn't stuck, and bench-test the float switch for continuity (changes state when the button is pressed) so the tub isn't over-filling.
- Pull the toe/access panel (power off, water shut off) and inspect the water inlet valve for a mineral crust or slow drip and the drain check valve for a torn or warped flap; look for a chalky dried-water ring tracing the leak to its source under the tub.
- Technician-only: with the lower assembly accessed, inspect the circulation/drain pump shaft seal for weeping at the center base and check the tub and sump for hairline cracks. A failed pump seal or cracked tub is the definitive, expensive cause and is condemned last, only after all cheaper sources above are cleared.
