How we diagnose it — in order
- Confirm power and reset the control: verify the outlet is live and the machine is plugged in fully, then unplug for 5+ minutes to clear the control board's memory and reboot it before chasing anything deeper.
- Check the basics that block the fill: confirm both hot and cold supply taps are fully open, and that the fill hoses aren't kinked or crimped behind the machine. Then close the lid/door firmly until the latch clicks -- most washers won't fill until the lock signals 'closed.'
- Shut the supply taps, unthread the fill hoses, and inspect the small inlet-valve mesh screens for sediment, rust, or hard-water scale. Rinse out any debris and reseat the hoses -- a clogged screen starves or stops the fill and is the cheapest common cause.
- With the machine unplugged, access and test the lid switch (top-loader) or door-lock switch assembly (front-loader) for continuity while actuating it. No continuity when engaged means the safety interlock is open, so the control never energizes the fill circuit -- replace the failed switch/lock.
- Test the water inlet valve solenoids for continuity at the coil terminals (an open/infinite reading condemns the coil). Then, with the machine running a fill, measure AC voltage at the valve connector during the call for water: roughly 120V present but no fill = bad valve (replace it); no voltage = the control board isn't energizing the circuit.
- If supply, screens, lock, and valve all check out and the valve never sees voltage on a fill command, condemn the main control board (electronic-control models) or timer (mechanical models) as the definitive last part -- weigh the board cost against the machine's age before replacing.
