How we diagnose it — in order
- Pin down WHEN the water appears, since cycle timing localizes the source: leaking during fill points to the supply side, leaking during wash/agitation points to the door boot or excess suds, and leaking during drain/spin points to the pump or its hoses. Run a cycle and watch which phase produces the puddle before opening anything.
- Rule out the no-tools/no-cost cause first: confirm the customer is using only HE detergent and a small dose. Over-sudsing pushes foam and water past the door seal, dispenser, and vents during the first agitation. Run a clear-water rinse cycle and confirm the leak stops before condemning any part.
- Check the back of the machine: inspect the hot/cold fill hoses and the water-inlet valve connections for weeping, and confirm the rubber washers are seated and the couplings are snug. A slow puddle that appears while the machine sits idle usually traces to the inlet valve or a fill-hose connection rather than an internal part.
- On a front-loader, peel back and inspect the full door boot gasket, especially the lower fold, for tears, trapped debris, or clogged drain weep holes. On a top-loader, this is where you check the tub-to-pump hose and clamps. A boot that leaks only under a full load or during agitation hides damage in the bottom that is easy to miss.
- Pull and clean the pump filter/coin trap, then inspect the drain pump housing and the pump-to-tub hose with the machine running on drain/spin. Look for cracks in the pump volute, a weeping pump shaft seal, or a loose hose clamp. Confirm whether water exits here specifically during drain and spin before ordering a pump.
- If supply, suds, boot, hoses, and pump are all confirmed dry, the definitive cause is the tub/bearing seal behind the drum (often signalled by rusty grease tracks, drum roughness, or play at the shaft). This requires major disassembly and a seal/bearing kit, so condemn it last only after the cheaper sources above are ruled out.
